I have waited for this option for what seems like ages now and I’m glad to say its finally here, not because Nokia finally woke up, but because Sujesh decided to use Python and make it happen. I am sure all of you have felt the need for the sleep mode at some point or the other, specially the ones who listen to music before dozing off at night and find the phone dead in the morning because the music player wasn’t turned off.
As part of my Birthday celebrations, Nokia today announced that they had started shipping the 5800 Xpress Music in select countries around the world including Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Finland, among others. What such an announcement usually means is that you should start seeing the 5800 in stores near you within a week or two. The price will vary from region to region, however in India it is expected to retail at around the Rs. 21,000 mark. This press release means that we could see the 5800 come out in December itself, and not January like we had earlier heard.
Today on my way home I was listening to some tunes on my E71. I realized how much I would love to have the song that was playing as a ring tone. We all know how this works, setting a song as a ring tone can become a nightmare after you’ve heard the phone ring a couple times. But then I got to thinking it would great to have a program that would be able to randomly play tracks from a specified folder and use those as ring tones. So the user wouldn’t have to hear the same song over and over. It would be a unique and surprising experience each time. I searched online but didn’t find any solutions, so I left it the hands of the users @ Howard Forums to see if anyone had an answer or suggestion. Luckily, Oddsocks had a response, FreeTones.
Here is some great news for Nokia S60 users, apparently Nokia has been working on revamping the security framework on Java applications and the nagging permissions we continuously need to give in order for them to work, may soon be a thing of the past. The idea behind prompts was security but since native applications and other runtime applications do not have to follow the same rules on S60, Nokia’s decided to rid Java applications of the burden too. We can finally hope to check our Gmail without hitting ‘Yes’!
The two things that should make the situation better for Java developers on S60:
Nokia is holding another virtual launch which comes to us this time in the form of Nokia Remix London. The tagline of the programme is “join us to hear big news that looks set to mash up the world of mobile music”. Its been a long time since Nokia’s touchscreen ‘Tube’ leaked out and since this is a music event and that’s a Xpress Music device, its safe to assume we’ll witness the first S60 touch device get official today. There may be other surprises along the way too or so I hope!
This month’s official S60 newsletter included a nice little “tip of the month” column that highlighted the quickest way to add a carriage return (enter key basically) to your text messages/notes: just hit the 0 (zero) button three times. So simple, yet so effective.
So that got me a little excited (that was something I’d been trying to figure out for ages), and thinking at the same time. Which resulted in the idea for this entry: the continually updating S60 phone shortcut post. Some of these will probably be pretty well known already, but I’m hoping it’ll be a nice reference for all.
Got any cool shortcuts? Send them by mail or add a comment, and I’ll drop it into this post.
Capcom will be releasing Resident Evil Degeneration later this year on the N-Gage platform. Fully optimized and created strictly for N-Gage the game will support enhanced 3D graphics as well as multiple mission modes, so the fun factor should be fully there. The release of the game will coincide with the CG feature length film with the same title being released later this year. I cant wait to see a live demo of this game and what Capcom might offer in the future, maybe a little Street Fighter customized for Nseries handsets would be nice :P. Enjoy!
An Evening With S60 @ Nokia Flagship Store, NYC 7:30 pm
If you’re in the NYC area, hit up the Nokia Flagship Store at 7:30 pm today for “An Evening With S60″. There’ll be food, drinks, fun, tons of Nokia devices, and me. Also attending the event is Dean Kamen, “legendary” inventor of the Segway. Yep, the Segway. Should be an interesting night.
I have been using the Nokia 6300 for about a week now and what can I say, I do miss having a high end phone and take it for granted everyday. But I still love, hate, and doubly hate some of the phones offerings and would like to share that with you. The Nokia 6300 is a mid range phone that offers the following:
I have read about TAT Kastor before and was amazed to see the demo on YouTube. The possible S60 UI is gorgeous to say the least and is exactly what Nokia phones need in my opinion (or Nvdia’s UI). Although relatively simple looking it is a huge improvement over what is currently being used or being released. The main reason why some of this technology isnt availbale is the compatibility with older generation phones. But we can still try and hope that this will someday be a reality.
While no surprise that Nokia controls a dominant amount of mobile phones on the market , it might be a surprise that not alot of those phone support Microsoft popular Exchange profile. But as of today Nokia is bringing exchange support to all S60 Version 3 handsets which include many of the popular Nokia devices such as N95, N82, and the forthcoming N96, N85, and N79. Earlier this year Nokia unveiled its internet file management system that was well received and widely used. Nokia takes this service a step further by introducing a new PC Suite that will synchronize all aspects of your phone to the Ovi website. You will be able to access the site via another PC or directly from your mobile phone. The Ovi Suite is available for download at the Ovi site, Ive also provided a link. Enjoy!
