Good news for those of you interested in reducing your energy use:
The world's top five cellphone makers last week launched a common energy rating system for phone chargers, making it easier for consumers to compare and choose the ones consuming the least energy.
The new rating system is a cellphone industry response to heavy criticism from environmentalists. The industry has become the world's top consumer electronics business by volume.
The new ratings system covers all chargers currently sold by Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG Electronics, and ranges from five stars for the most efficient chargers down to zero stars for the ones consuming the most energy.
According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung Electronics surpassed Motorola in the third quarter to became the largest mobile phone vendor in the United States. Samsung's broad device portfolio across multiple carriers, technologies and segments were the key reasons behind its growth.
News today from the Boy Genius Report might well be an indicator of even more bad tidings heading Motorola’s way. Up until now, no matter how badly they did with their international mobile phones, Motorola could at least rely on the American market for sustenance, since they were the number 1 manufacturer in the land of the free.
Not any more, though. Samsung have kicked them off the top spot.
Back to the world of Motorola, now, with a story from The Register. You may remember I spoke about the Motorola AURA a couple of weeks back, and how it was Motorola’s attempt at breaking into the niche ‘rich-folk‘ market dominated by the Nokia 8800 series and Vertu’s mobile phones. I was torn, then, about whether the Motorola AURA is a good idea, or not, since it is, at the end of the day, a stupidly expensive mobile phone that isn’t even a top-ender, although it does look nice.
According to data released today by Strategy Analytics, 303 million cellphones were shipped worldwide in Q3 2008, up a disappointing 5% year-over-year. A marked slowdown in shipments to emerging markets caused the industry’s weakest growth rate since 2002. Four of the top 7 vendors grew at single-digit rates or less. Apple was the star performer, grabbing a 2% global share. Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG were below par, while Apple, RIM and Samsung outperformed.
Specific details:
News has come through from MobileBurn, regarding Motorola’s plans to get themselves out of the financial doldrums, and make their mobile phones so much more desirable. To do that, they’re going to slim down vastly from the 7 different platforms their mobile phones run on, and concentrate on just 3, which actually makes a lot of sense, since they can focus their efforts, then, just like Nokia do with the triple-header of S40, S60 and S60 Touch platforms.
So, the question is, what software platforms will Motorola mobile phones be based on in future?
You may remember that I’ve blogged about mobile phones on display in the top BBC drama Spooks, before. You may also recall that I said they should probably be jealous of their MI6 equivalent (a certain Mr Bond), because he gets better mobile phones than them.
Well, now that the 7th series of Spooks has hit our screens, we can finally answer the important question: have MI5 given their field agents better mobile phones?
Oh, and is Jo dead, obviously…

“The voice, browsing and music features represented on this list speak to the diversity of portfolios the carriers must maintain for a diverse consumer base,” said Ross Rubin, analyst with NPD Group.
