The Nokia E66 Phone, Boxed
There’s two semi-new firmware updates for the Nokia E66 and E71 smartphones, as well as a general update to the Nokia Software Updater app. Changes include “performance improvements” for the camera (viewfinder orientation), Mail for Exchange synchonization, and browsing. You also get the latest versions of Mail for Exchange and Nokia Maps.
Herre’s hoping Nokia fixed the dedicated camera key actually functioning as a dedicated camera key bug, the wacky accelerometer, and this annoying bug I get sometimes that causes the backlighting to remain off when unlocking the phone.
BGR has let loose a barrage of pictures showing the ATT branded version of the Nokia E71, the E71x. While looking similar to what Nokia has released the coloring is a little different, dawning a Gun Metal exterior. While all the internal components should be the same as the E71-2 the software portions will go through a re-branding process. BGR says that the phone should be available on a two year contract for $150. Release date is still unknown. For the full read hit the link. Enjoy!
Gwapz from Mobile World Innovation has just posted some great side by side shots of the E71 and E63. This is a great set that shows just how different both devices are. From initial looks it seems that the E63 is quite a bit thicker, but well have to wait on Gwapz review and impressions to find out if the thickness feels different. Enjoy!
The big shaftola for the US/NAM owners of these devices but for others you will be able to update your E71 and E66 with a new firmware. The firmware includes the following:
Nokia E71 SW releases 110.07.127
Both the E71 and the E66 have been updated to v. 110.07.127 and v. 110.07.126 respectively. This update brings a new versions of Mail For Exchange and Nokia Maps and also includes a number of performance improvements including camera viewfinder orientation, Mail for Exchange synchronisation and browsing.
But before you update, a word of caution- this update kills the ability to ‘hack’ your phone, so if you’re interested in that sort of thing - stay clear. Both Mail For Exchange and Nokia Maps can be updated by stand alone SIS files if that’s some consolation.
Make no mistake, if you use it once – it will come back to haunt you. This is exactly what has happened to me. I had used the E71 for a brief period a couple of months ago and since that day I have not been able to take it out of my mind no matter what phone I have to play with.
KBoardBox has started an interesting thread on swapping housings from a dummy model E71 to a live model. Although theres alot to dig through the posts are very informative with lots of pictures. This is a must read for anyone looking to change from a black to white housing and vice versa, to repairing there E71 because the casing is damaged. Hit the link for all the info, enjoy!
As an S60 ambassador I have recentley decided to apply for the Nokia Maps campaign and write a couple articles based around what I have found. In the past I really never enjoyed using the Nokia Maps application instead opting for much for user friendly solutions such as Google Maps and Amaze GPS. As with most map applications Nokia Maps includes the ability to zoom in/out of maps for closer inspection of streets and locations. In order to use this feature you generally press the * and # to zoom in/out. For most non qwerty S60 devices this is a simple task but on the E71 this is a nightmare.
After using the N95-1 for more than a year and occasionally playing with my wife’s N81 (thouroughly amazed by the capabilities of the N Series devices in the mean while), the E 71 buzz fianlly got to me and I decided to trial the E71. The guys at WOM world obliged my request very promptly and shipped the device to me. There were some issues with the delivery of the device by DHL due to some confusion over a customs duty but I finally got the DHL package on 08 Oct. What came as a surprise to me was that WOM world had also bundled the BH-602 Nokia Bluetooth Headset along with the E71.
Dexte-r has an intersting review of a simple pair of headphones that work great with a variety of devices and different MM headphone jacks. Its good to see a review of a non bluetooth headset. Head on over to his site for the full review, enjoy!

I really didn’t take notice to this issue until I had received my NAM edition a while back, but the Nokia E71 has a light leak that is a common occurrence. The problem starts at the bottom of the screen and the top of the keyboard. There is a minor gap that allows a thin stripe of light to leak out. Although not a major concern I felt it was necessary to address this issue because I wonder how the newly manufactured units have this same issue, or has it been corrected. Chime in on the comments section.
As soon as the E71 was announced, it had a magnetic attraction to it. Here was a phone that right from the spec sheet and press photos screamed that I am good, probably the best phone Nokia’s made in recent times. After four weeks of constant usage, the E71 was able to live up to the aura its launch had created for it. That being said, there are still things that the E71 indeed needs to take flak for. This post is a rundown of the ups and the downs on the E71, following on from my initial impressions. The last part of this review will list buyer profiles and hopefully help decide if this is the phone for you.
